Government announces major prostate cancer screening trial to end needless prostate deaths
22nd November 2023
We are delighted that the government has announced a major new prostate cancer screening trial that could save the lives of thousands of men across the UK. Backed by £42 million, TRANSFORM will use innovative screening methods, such as MRI scanning, to detect prostate cancer, potentially saving thousands of lives through early protection and treatment.
As part of our End Needless Prostate Deaths campaign, we have been calling for action through the media and meeting with politicians including Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to push for greater care and parity of care for men with prostate cancer. One of the things we have been calling for is action to increase screening and diagnostic capacity.
Since the campaign launched earlier this year, the government has announced thirteen new diagnostic centres, enabling the NHS to perform nearly 750,000 more tests and checks each year, as well as TRANSFORM.
“It is fantastic news that the government is backing this new screening trial for prostate cancer. Utilising methods like MRI scans could revolutionise prostate cancer diagnoses and help end the high number of needless deaths from this awful disease. I’m delighted that so many men will benefit and hope it will pave the way for a wider rollout."
