Things to do in Llanberis

Whilst Llanberis is best known as a climber's village hub, nestled at the foot of Snowdon, there is much more to do and see beyond the various mountainous peaks. Check out our suggestions below!

Heritage

Llanberis has a rich industrial history, spurred by its burgeoning slate trade. It was a huge advantage being so close to Snowdon and Llanberis soon became ‘area that roofed the world’. Take a visit to the National Slate Museum to see the original Victorian engineering workshops, and even watch demonstrations on how the slate was made! https://museum.wales/slate/

Alternatively, check out a slightly more modern invention: the Electric Mountain tour shows where Llanberis’ First Hydro Company’s power station is located. Reopening in 2020, you can explore the winding tunnels within the mountains and learn about hydro power electricity. https://www.electricmountain.co.uk/

Transport

The Snowdon Railway, in operation since 1896, offers travellers an alternative route to Snowdon’s summit, Yr Wyddfa. Experience the breathtaking views of Snowdonia from the comfort of a traditional diesel or steam train. There is also a visitor centre and café where you can soak up the views, that on a clear day stretch to as far as Ireland. https://snowdonrailway.co.uk/

Beautiful Scenery

Of course there are other historical sights to see, that aren’t mountains! Llyn Padarn is one of the largest glacially formed lakes in Wales, surrounded by some amazing sights, such as Padarn County Park, Sessile Oak woodland and Vivian Quarry. From here you are also able to board the Llanberis Lake Railway, which takes you through Lake Padarn, stopping midway at Cei Llydan, a tranquil picnic place, and at Gilfach Ddu, where you can watch the driver stoking the fire or spend some time in the gift shop and cafe. http://www.lake-railway.co.uk/

Or, if you want a short 10 minute idyllic walk from Llanberis village, head to the Ceunant Mawr Waterfall, also known as Llanberis falls. This impressive waterfall plunges over 100ft in two stages, falling into a gorge.

The Dolbadarn Castle, built in the early 13th century, is another popular tourist spot. A vital defense and point of water control during the Kingdom of Gwynedd, this cobbled, round tower overlooks Lake Padarn and offers travellers a picturesque viewpoint.
